Quick Summary

Money work in India runs through official government websites. Tax filing, PAN, PF, pension, small savings, benefit transfers and farmer support each have one real portal. This guide lists all 8 of them and tells you what each one does. (Source: Income Tax Department / EPFO, 2 October 2026.)

What This Guide Covers

Eight government portals handle most money and finance work in India. They cover tax filing, PAN services, retirement savings, small savings, benefit transfers and farmer support.

Each service has one official website. This guide lists all eight, with the link, the level (Central or State) and what the portal is for. Always use the real portal for tax returns, PF claims and benefit checks.

The 8 Portals At A Glance

  1. Income Tax e-Filing (incometax.gov.in) — file your ITR, pay advance tax, check refund status, and download Form 26AS and AIS. You must link Aadhaar with PAN if you want to file a return. Most tax notices are answered here too.
  2. Protean PAN Services (tinpan.proteantech.in) — the Income Tax Department's authorised PAN provider. Apply for a new PAN, correct your details, order a reprint, or track your application. Your physical card is sent after online verification.
  3. EPFO Unified Member Portal — check your PF passbook, file PF withdrawal and advance claims, and update KYC. Your claim money goes to the bank account linked with your UAN-KYC.
  4. eNPS (enps.nsdl.com) — open an NPS Tier-1 or Tier-2 account and manage your contributions online. NPS gives you tax benefits under Section 80CCD and stays with you when you change jobs.
  5. National Savings Institute (nsiindia.gov.in) — rates and rules for PPF, NSC, SCSS and other small savings schemes. It also explains post office procedures. Check the latest rate here before you invest.
  6. PFMS (pfms.nic.in) — track Direct Benefit Transfer payments like scholarships, subsidies and social security benefits. Search by bank account or application number.
  7. PM-KISAN (pmkisan.gov.in) — credits Rs 6,000 a year to eligible farmer families in three instalments. It handles e-KYC, status checks, instalment history and new registration.
  8. National Portal State/UT Services (india.gov.in/services/state) — links to state tax, pension, treasury and benefit portals. Use it to reach the right State department.

Who Is Eligible

Eligibility is different for each portal. Taxpayers use the Income Tax and PAN portals, employees use the EPFO portal, and any adult can open an NPS account. PM-KISAN is only for eligible farmer families.

State finance services are for people in that State or Union Territory.

Each portal saves you a trip to an office. You can file returns, fix your PAN, claim your PF, open a pension account, check savings rates, trace a benefit payment and finish PM-KISAN e-KYC from your phone or computer.

Register on the Income Tax portal with your PAN and Aadhaar, then file your ITR, pay tax and track refunds from the same account. Apply for PAN on the Protean portal. Log in to the EPFO portal with your UAN for balance and claims.

Open NPS on eNPS. Check PFMS with your bank account or application number. Finish PM-KISAN e-KYC at pmkisan.gov.in using OTP or biometric.

Reach state services through the National Portal.

The income tax return deadline is usually 31 July for non-audit taxpayers, but always confirm the current year's date on the Income Tax portal. Advance tax instalments fall due in June, September, December and March. PM-KISAN instalments arrive in windows announced by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Eligibility

  • You can file an income tax return if you have a PAN linked with Aadhaar, because Aadhaar-PAN linking is mandatory for filing.
  • Anyone who needs a new PAN, a correction, a reprint or a status check can use the Protean PAN portal.
  • You can use the EPFO Unified Member Portal if you are an EPF member with a UAN and a bank account linked through UAN-KYC.
  • Any individual can open an NPS Tier-1 or Tier-2 account on eNPS.
  • PM-KISAN is meant for eligible farmer families only.
  • State and UT finance services are for people who need state-level tax, pension, treasury or benefit services in that State or UT.

Benefits

  • Income Tax e-Filing lets you file ITRs, pay advance tax, check refund status and download Form 26AS and AIS.
  • The Protean PAN portal handles new PAN applications, corrections, reprints and status tracking.
  • The EPFO Unified Member Portal lets you check your passbook balance, file PF withdrawal and advance claims, and update KYC.
  • eNPS lets you open and manage an NPS account, which offers tax benefits under Section 80CCD and is portable across employers.
  • The National Savings Institute tells you the current rates and rules for PPF, NSC, SCSS and other small savings schemes, so you can confirm rates before investing.
  • PFMS lets you check whether a government credit such as a scholarship, subsidy or social security benefit has reached your bank account.
  • PM-KISAN credits Rs 6,000 a year to eligible farmer families in three instalments.
  • The National Portal State/UT Services gives you official links to state tax, pension, treasury and benefit portals.

Required Documents

  • PAN and Aadhaar for income tax return filing, since Aadhaar-PAN linking is mandatory.
  • Application details for the Protean PAN portal, where your physical card is dispatched only after online verification.
  • A bank account linked with your UAN-KYC, because EPF claims are settled to that account.
  • Land details and Aadhaar details for new PM-KISAN registration.
  • Your bank account number or application number if you want to track a Direct Benefit Transfer payment on PFMS.

How to Apply

  1. Register on the Income Tax portal with your PAN and Aadhaar, then file your ITR, pay tax and track refunds from the same account.
  2. Apply for a new PAN, correction or reprint through the Protean PAN portal, the Income Tax Department's authorised provider.
  3. Log in to the EPFO Unified Member Portal with your UAN to check your passbook or file a PF claim.
  4. Open an NPS Tier-1 or Tier-2 account and manage contributions on eNPS.
  5. Check the current PPF, NSC and SCSS rates on the National Savings Institute website before you invest.
  6. Enter your bank account or application number on PFMS to see if a government benefit payment has been transferred.
  7. Log in at pmkisan.gov.in and complete OTP-based or biometric e-KYC to keep your PM-KISAN instalments coming.
  8. Find your State or UT finance service through the National Portal's State/UT services page.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not use lookalike websites. Always start from the official portal link so your tax filing, PF claim or benefit check happens on the real website.
  • Do not skip Aadhaar-PAN linking, because return filing is not allowed without it.
  • Do not leave your PM-KISAN e-KYC pending, because instalments stop until you complete it.
  • Do not invest in small savings schemes without checking the latest rates on the National Savings Institute website.
