Who Was Shyamji Krishna Varma?
Shyamji Krishna Varma was born on 4 October 1857 in Mandvi, in the Kutch region of Gujarat. He was a lawyer, a scholar and a revolutionary. After his legal studies, he studied Sanskrit and other subjects, and became known as a powerful speaker against British colonial rule.
In 1905 he founded India House in London, a hostel and centre that became a gathering place for Indian students and nationalists in Britain. He also started a journal called The Indian Sociologist, which carried strong arguments for India's freedom. Because of his revolutionary activities, the British government kept a close watch on him, and he eventually left Britain and moved to Geneva, Switzerland, where he lived until his death in 1930.
For many years his ashes remained in Geneva. In 2003 they were brought back to India and immersed in the Arabian Sea off Mandvi, his birthplace. Universities and institutions in Gujarat are named after him, and every year on his birth anniversary leaders remember his contribution to the freedom struggle.
